This workshop will walk through the restructuring process and strategies for distressed debt investors.
When discussing the restructuring process, we will discuss what drives companies to file for bankruptcy, alternatives to in-court restructuring (chapter 11 bankruptcy), strategies to reduce debt burdens outside of and within bankruptcy, debt waterfalls (projecting returns for distressed debt investors), and the role of different types of subordination within distressed investing strategies. Afterward, we will walk through a case study on Neiman Marcus' chapter 11 bankruptcy by analyzing the strategies of different distressed investors and ultimately looking at how the bankruptcy unfolded.Point Person: Evan Xiang | exiang@uchicago.edu -
Algorithmic trading drives a majority of trading volume in the United States and has demonstrated a significant and persistent effect on markets worldwide. This effect has ranged from the day-to-day assurance of fair prices provided by market makers to an "irrational" trillion-dollar flash crash observed in 2010. Given the key role that technology plays in our day-to-day lives, it naturally follows that technology has a significant effect on our financial markets through quantitative financial institutions.
This workshop discusses how technology has drastically affected how traders and investors make financial decisions, whether through the usage of alternative data to price instruments or by navigating market structure to capture edge. There will also be an interactive introduction to market making explaining how and why a market maker creates a bid-ask spread. Workshop participants will be able to formalize our discussion on how algorithmic traders make decisions and how market makers enforce fair prices.Point Person: Edwin Suresh | edwins1@uchicago.edu -

The University of Chicago Real Estate Investment Group (“UChicago RIG”) offers undergraduate students a platform to learn about real estate investing and to explore real estate related careers in a collaborative community. We are the first and only investment club on campus focused primarily on real estate investing. The ultimate goal of RIG is to provide educational and professional development opportunities for UChicago students with an interest in pursuing a career in real estate and learning about real estate markets, investing, and how real estate investment and urbanization impact communities. In addition to our core focus of real estate markets and our primarily finance based curriculum, we will aim to grow awareness of the social issues associated with real estate and plan on facilitating discussions related to these topics by bringing in speakers and publishing reports related to the social and environmental side of real estate.
The real estate workshop will walk through the benefits of portfolio diversification through real estate investments in publicly traded securities. RIG will walk attendees through the anatomy of a REITs (real estate investment trust) financial statements and corporate structure as well as the historical returns associated with investing in these securities and the valuation methodologies employed in REIT analysis. Alongside this, the workshop will touch on real estate private equity transactions and how capital is deployed in private real estate markets.Point Person: Paul Stacek | pjs@uchicago.edu
